Gallit and Chris Cavendish

Discover the story behind Loveline Baskets, a vibrant business created by wife and husband team Gallit and Chris Cavendish.

Loveline Baskets was created as a tribute to our son Elon who passed away on his 8th day of life. It is our intention to send love out into the world one basket at a time.

My name is Gallit Cavendish, and I, along with my husband and two daughters Calliope and Poppy, live in the beautiful small town of Bowdoinham, Maine. For over 20 years my husband Chris owned and operated an organic vegetable farm. I am a professional chef by trade and have always been passionate about cooking beautiful food. One day 14 years ago, a farmer walked into the restaurant where I was the Chef looking to sell his beautiful vegetables. Not only did I love the produce but I fell in love with the farmer.. Shortly after, I left my job, moved onto the farm, got married, and started a family. We have a lovely life here together.

9 years ago, our son Elon was born and died just 8 short days later. Deep in despair, I found myself at my sewing machine trying to find something positive, something beautiful. Loveline Baskets came about over the years as a way for me to center in this grief and to find a new way in life. Loveline Baskets is a labor of love for me. It has allowed me to create beautiful items and stay centered on being a good mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend, and active community member.

Several years into the business I was joined by my husband and creative partner Chris. Working with sustainably harvested wood, Chris creates beautiful hand-turned heirloom quality lids and handles for many of our baskets. Sharing this work with Chris is an absolute joy! We are excited about what the future holds for us.

Loveline Baskets are hand-crafted using high-quality cotton rope sourced from Maine, exclusively tailored to our specifications. Each batch of rope undergoes a meticulous hand-dyeing process in eco-friendly synthetic dyes to ensure vibrant and lasting colors. Following the dyeing process, the rope is carefully washed, dried, and delicately untangled before being sewn free of form into unique shapes using an industrial sewing machine. To add a touch of elegance and durability, several of our baskets are adorned with leather tabs and accented with antique brass rivets, showcasing the commitment to craftsmanship and attention to detail that defines Loveline Baskets. All baskets are designed and sewn by Gallit.

Lids and handles are designed and created by Chris.

Each unique lid has been designed and crafted by Chris. Walnut, Cherry, and Maple. These three wood species offer a texture and hue that reflects and enhances the simple beauty of our lids and handles. Each lid is made from a single piece of sustainably harvested wood and is finished with Osmo Polyx Oil, known for its quality, being food-safe, and eco-friendly.

“In its purest form, a basket is a vessel to hold the artifacts of our lives. The tradition of basket making is nearly as old as humankind and as a maker, my place in this long history resonates deeply within myself. As a mother who has lost their child too soon, each basket has taken on another layer of meaning for me. My baskets have become the vessels within which my love for my son, my family, and all of humankind is held. I believe that I have been able to turn the work of my sorrow and grief into something beautiful and meaningful. My personal mission is to send love out into the world, one basket at a time”.

Love, Gallit
